About this Substack
I wanted a place to write about my experience living in Taiwan as a “reverse immigrant” — that is, an American-born Taiwanese Chinese American who moved back to my parents’ country as an adult. I’ve been here for a decade now, and to this day, there are so many interesting aspects of living here that I want to share, from food to language to culture observations. So this Substack will mostly be made up of thoughts around that, though I’ll probably also pepper in things about motherhood and my aerial practice and anything else that floats my fancy.
I’ll aim to post once a week, though I will be honest and say that, with a toddler, life can be unpredictable! At the very least, I pledge to post once a month.
About Me
I’m the author of the novel HOMESEEKING, about two childhood sweethearts who grow up in Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese War and are separated due to the Chinese Civil War. They meet again in their seventies, at a 99 Ranch in Los Angeles.
I’ve published personal essays, culture articles, and short fiction in various publications, including The New York Times’ Modern Love, People Magazine, The Cut, Eater, The Atlantic, and more.
I currently reside in Taipei, Taiwan with my husband and toddler.
A note about paid subscriptions
I opted into offering paid subscriptions because Substack kept badgering me to in order to “complete” my tasks in setting up a Substack (and nothing bothers me more than seeing an unchecked to-do task)! I will eventually figure out some paid content — maybe some lists I make or something — but this newsletter, at least for now, will largely be comprised of free content. Any paid subscriptions will be considered a goodwill showing of support for my work and life as a writer, and one I greatly appreciate!
